Long Bio

Lyndsey Getty is the creator of thought literacy, the skillset for understanding and managing thoughts. She’s on a mission to help people build healthier relationships with their thoughts and believes that treating thought like a fundamental life skill has intrinsic and instrumental value that will have a positive impact on both individuals and communities.

Author of the Thought Swap and Thoughtbook series, her work focuses on using thoughts more intentionally to achieve goals and navigate challenges. She values practical application over theory and believes skills are built through awareness, effort, and practice. Recurring themes throughout her work include self-awareness, personal growth, stronger relationships, and the idea that small shifts in thinking can create meaningful change over time.

After teaching emotional intelligence, she realized a lot of people did not know foundational concepts about their thoughts, like the cognitive model and thought-emotion connection. She then started writing about topics from neuroscience, cognitive science, philosophy, and psychology in easy-to-understand terms. She first called it “thought management,” but soon realized she was teaching something more. In 2023, she coined the term “thought literacy” and began creating the thought literacy framework.

Her first book, Overthink, was lauded by a licensed clinical psychologist who said the book would “change your life” and called Getty’s work “utterly remarkable.” It was also featured in Independent Book Review’s Must-Read Books from the First Half of 2024 and Midwest Book Review’s Bookwatcher list.

In her TEDx talk, Thoughts. Words. Perspectives., Getty outlines how your thoughts initiate a chain reaction that directly influences your emotions, actions, and results and challenges the audience to drop the word “overthinking” from their vocabularies to stop reinforcing unhelpful mindsets.

Her research is being used in computational psychology to create VR therapeutic models for adaptive thought integration. Thought Swaps for Building Metacognition is being taught in teacher development programs for social and emotional learning. The thought literacy framework is being used in executive coaching programs. Readers appreciate her concise and conversational writing style and have called her books life-changing and a “breath of fresh air.”

A survivor of domestic violence, Lyndsey is in long-term remission from C-PTSD and depression. She adopts a trauma-informed approach and takes pride in not only teaching revolutionary methods but also serving as living proof of their efficacy.

She is available for speaking engagements and thought literacy, metacognition, and emotional intelligence training.
