Thought Swaps: The Metacognition Playbook Shows How People Who Learn Fast Really Think

A new book teaches readers to think like someone who already knows how to learn, adapt, and solve problems more effectively.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Rereading notes for an hour with nothing sticking? Blocking three hours for a project and finishing only two scattered hours of work? Cramming the night before and forgetting half of it? These are not motivation problems. They’re metacognition problems, and Philadelphia author and TEDx speaker Lyndsey Getty wrote a book to solve them.

Thought Swaps: The Metacognition Playbook (March 1, 2026, 978-1-972391-00-6, $9.99) gives readers 46 practical thought swaps showing the difference between ordinary thinking and the way someone who already has strong metacognition approaches learning and problem solving. For example, when you think “I have three hours so I can get three hours of work done,” the metacognitive swap is “I have three hours of clock time, but I will need breaks and might get interrupted. I can probably get two focused hours done.” The book also includes a full reference list of strategies for learning and problem solving, highlighting tools most people don’t realize are available.

“The people who thrive are not the ones with the most knowledge,” says Getty. “They are the ones who can learn quickly, adapt their approach, and solve new problems effectively. That ability comes from metacognition.”

Getty’s work has earned clinical recognition. Lisa Parker Hayreh, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist with over thirty years of experience, calls her writing “utterly remarkable” and recommends it to anyone looking to transform negative thinking patterns.

Thought Swaps: The Metacognition Playbook is available now on Amazon for $9.99.

ABOUT THE THOUGHT SWAPS SERIES

The Thought Swaps series pairs thoughts you recognize with adaptive swaps to show what healthy thinking actually sounds like from the inside. The series is part of Getty’s broader framework of thought literacy, an original skillset she developed and first published in 2023. All titles in the series are available on Amazon.
