Moments like these feel empowering because when we watch someone overcome an obstacle, their victory feels like our own. On the surface, the challenge seems to be a bad romantic relationship. But the real struggle wasn’t with someone else; it was Miley’s relationship with herself, shaped by her thoughts and the way she was conditioned to think. (Not picking on Miley—this is something we all go through.)

We’re taught to believe that happiness and self-worth depend on having a partner. This idea is reinforced by nearly every aspect of our environment—love songs with lyrics about not being able to live without someone, movies where finding “the one” is the ultimate happy ending, and commercials subtly suggesting that the perfect relationship equals a perfect life. With so much pressure, some people start defining their value by their relationship status, believing they’re incomplete until someone comes along to love, care for, and finally “complete” them.

But there was never anything missing in the first place. As Miley realized—and as many people don’t until much later in life—the person who will love you best is you. This doesn’t mean relationships aren’t valuable; it means they should add to our happiness, not be the source of it. You are your own greatest friend and cheerleader. And while it may sound cliché, it’s true: when you build self-love, other love will follow.

So while the crowd cheers for Miley’s empowerment, they also need to reflect on the deeper issue: like most of us, she was misled from the start.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are thoughts that hold you back from reaching your full potential. They convince you that you’re not worthy, change isn’t possible, happiness depends on external factors, and that you don’t have value simply as you are.

These beliefs come from societal conditioning and build up over time. For example, if you’re taught that failure is the opposite of success instead of proof that you tried, you develop a fear of it. This fear makes you see past experiences as setbacks rather than opportunities to grow. The more you avoid trying, the more stuck you feel, creating a cycle that convinces you you’re not capable or that you don’t belong.
